HOYLAKE, England -- Edoardo and Francesco Molinari are pretty much inseparable. The brothers were partners in Europes winning Ryder Cup side in 2010. A year earlier, theyd teamed up to win the World Cup for Italy at Mission Hills. Now they are together on the British Open leaderboard. About 30 minutes after Edoardo signed for a 4-under 68 in the opening round at Hoylake on Thursday, Francesco rolled in a 15-feet eagle putt at No. 18 to shoot the same score. They ended the day tied for third with five others. "We were here on Sunday practicing together," said Francesco, the younger sibling by nearly two years. "Probably we did a good job." The brothers have been feeding off each others games ever since they dominated their local club championships at Circolo Golf Torino as teenagers. "It was a big thing growing up in Italy," Francesco said. "At our age, there werent that many golfers playing well so there was someone that you could compete against every day -- even just training with him every day, it was good to get the best out of our games." For the 33-year-old Edoardo, it is a welcome return to big-time golf. Since 2011, he has been beset by injuries, primarily to his left hand, on which he had surgery in 2012 and again last year. He also had problems with his left wrist. Edoardo has been playing injury-free for the past seven months and a runner-up finish at the Irish Open last month secured his spot at the British Open. "The toughest time was after the first surgery when you undergo one surgery one time, then you hope its the last one," he said. "And then to do it again something like a year later wasnt fun at all. But hopefully, touching wood, everything is fine now." Its not the first time Edoardo and Francesco have been alongside each other on a leaderboard. In the last qualifying event for the Ryder Cup in 2010, they were the final pairing at the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, and Edoardo finished with three straight birdies to win the tournament and seal a place on Europes team. In 2009, they also went head-to-head at the Scottish Open, with Edoardo prevailing again. "We dont like to lose to each other," Francesco said, "we dont like to lose to anyone else." "I saw the leaderboard," he added about his round on Thursday, "but its a tough course so you have to focus on what you are doing rather than the others are doing, even if its your brother." Just to maintain the Italian flavour at Royal Liverpool, Matteo Manassero shot 67 and is in second place behind Rory McIlroy. "Its good to see three Italians up there," Francesco said. "Im sure its going to be good for the kids watching us at home." Golf doesnt normally get much attention in Italy, but that may be about to change. "Italy at the moment is more about team sports, football in particular," Francesco said. "Im sure tonight they will be talking about us." Wholesale Nike Flex Cheap . The American will have to wait until Fridays match between Halep and Ana Ivanovic to know if she is through to the semis.Williams will make the final four unless Ivanovic manages to beat Halep in straight sets. Halep is guaranteed of a semifinal berth.Meanwhile, the outcome of the other group remains uncertain, with none of the four players qualified for the semis, and none out of contention.Petra Kvitova beat Maria Sharapova 6-3, 6-2, further eroding the Russian players hopes of claiming the year-end No. 1 ranking.Sharapova, who needs to win the title and rely on Williams not reaching the final if she is to bump the American from the top spot, fell to a 0-2 record while Kvitova is 1-1.In order for Sharapova to progress to the semis, she will need to win her last match against Agnieszka Radwanska and rely on Caroline Wozniacki beating Kvitova, and have both matches decided in straight sets.Williams credited her coach Patrick Mouratoglou with lifting her out of the doldrums and preparing her for Thursdays match.I started to believe that maybe I could come play another match, Williams said. I wasnt quite sure that I could.I was feeling mighty low. I was able to feed off this belief. I know that sounds weird, even though Ive won so many titles, I still at some point feel like, Oh gosh, maybe I might not be able to do this or maybe I might not be able to do that?Williams was fatalistic about whether she will make the semifinals and remain in the running for a third straight title at the season-ennding championships.ddddddddddddIf I wanted to win and be a part of the event, I should have won my match yesterday or should have done better, Williams said. If I dont qualify, Ill be sad, but it wasnt my year. Im not going to fall out and die.Bouchard, the Wimbledon finalist, came into the tournament with only two tour matches in a month due to injuries, and won only 11 games across her three matches.I didnt have ideal preparation but that can happen to a number of players at any given tournament, the Canadian said. Disappointing that its at such a big and cool event where I would love to play as well as I can.Sharapova, who lost the Wimbledon final to Kvitova in 2011, beat the Czech left-hander in their past five meetings and started brightly by winning the opening two games. But Kvitova took over from there, winning 11 of the next 12 games.Kvitova said she was feeling burnt out during her opening loss to Radwanska, so took an unusual approach to freshen up for Thursday. When I lost against Aga ... I was so tired and sick of the tennis for a moment, Kvitova said. So I didnt practice today at all, and I just really relaxed and cleaned my mind a little bit.Earlier, Wozniacki moved closer to a place in the semis by beating Radwanska 7-5, 6-3 for her second win in the group stage. The first set, which began with four service breaks in five games, lasted 67 minutes and contained some lengthy rallies that were punctuated by superb shot-making.Radwanska ended up the loser but played a couple of extraordinary volley winners: One picked up at her shoelaces and lifted diagonally over the net, and another leaping effort played with her back to the net.I just needed some more good serves as well in that match, said Radwanska, who has a win and a loss.Wozniacki was able to smile after Radwanskas trick shots.Im like, OK, you know what, thats just too good, Wozniacki said. You can either get frustrated or laugh — its better to laugh. ' ' '
