The flames erupted just after 5:30 p.m. in the 500 block of Beagle Road, not far from Interstate 78, in Bethel Township. The fire could be seen from miles away, and officials quickly struck a second alarm as the flames and smoke began to spread throughout the structure.

One neighbor, who is a former firefighter, said it was a difficult scene because of narrow roads, all of the snow, and a lack of water. He also said these types of structures go up quickly.

Firefighters were able to save half of the building and keep the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings, according to the Pennsylvania State Police, who estimated the loss at around $200,000.

The property owner told 69 News that the building was empty at the time of the fire. He said he was scheduled to receive a delivery of 21,000 chicks Monday morning.

Investigators said they determined that the fire started on the second floor of the building, but they have not pinpointed the cause.
