Two of the most popular hanamachi (previously and today) are situated in Tokyo and Kyoto. Some hanamachi created close to sanctuaries and places of worship. Close these were in some cases "ochava" or tea houses where imminent business customers would often visit. Such houses would lease spaces for entire evening gatherings at which geishas could engage numerous clients all at once.
