Organize things before it gets too hot.
Before your next heat wave, be sure to tidy up the interior of your fridge. This way, you'll spend as little time as possible looking for things.

6. Cool things before putting them in the fridge.
Maybe you cooked a large amount of food on Sundays so you could put together uncooked meals for the rest of the week? Good for you - that was smart. But before you put this hot food in the fridge, be mindful to let it cool off a little on the countertop.
When you put something hot in the fridge, the appliance has to work extra hard to cool it down (and organize other contents in there). Just make sure to avoid letting your food enter the "danger zone": Food enters a danger zone between 40 degrees Fahrenheit and 140 degrees Fahrenheit, so don't leave food outside at room temperature for more than two hours. And only one hour if the weather is hot!
7. Use built-in containers and drawers.
The free floating elements in your refrigerator emit moisture, and make your refrigerator work very hard just to regulate the air. Use airtight containers to hold leftovers and store produce properly in fragile drawers.
Surrender to your air conditioner.
Stop us if this sounds familiar: You have central air in your home but you don't want to run it because it takes so much energy. Unfortunately, the energy you save is being put to use by not completely cooling the house in your fridge, as you work hard to keep it cool in an extremely hot kitchen. It might not be a single trade-off, but keeping the temperature regulated throughout your home can help the appliance work more efficiently.
