Sources in the federal government informed The Nation that Pakistani armed forces, especially the Army, have already built two of the six key nuclear storage facilities in the country. These facilities are located in Azad Kashmir (NWFP) and Muzaffarabad (Islamabad Capital Territory), and they are being built as part of Pakistan’s nuclear protection scheme.
The sources also stated that Pakistan’s nuclear security program has also created five new security wings: the General Security Division (GSD), which is responsible for handling the sensitive defense secrets and information; the Defense Security Division (DSD), which is responsible for handling the strategic weapons; the Personnel Security Organization (PSO), which is responsible for the personal information of the armed forces; the Special Security Organization (SSO), which is responsible for the security and disposal of sensitive military weapons and equipment; and the Special Services Group (SSG), which is responsible for the security of the strategic facilities.
According to these sources, in addition to the above, Pakistan has also built up a special security force to oversee the protection of Pakistan’s nuclear assets. “The armed forces and intelligence agencies were already engaged with the military’s nuclear protection program, which started almost ten years ago,” said one official. “The effort was to build strong indigenous nuclear weapons and security-related capabilities.
