Brian Hoyer or Johnny Manziel? The long term answer is obvious, and there will be plenty of season previews in the future to dissect and analyze Johnny Manziels game, but for now the former Heisman Trophy winner and 22nd overall draft pick will start the year as a backup QB. In a typical year where a team invests a high draft pick on a quarterback, the combination of that team not having anyone better on the roster and the promise of the new guy leads to an easy decision for coaches, to go with the promise and start the rookie right out of the gate. But while Manziel certainly fits the role of QB with potential, the Browns may still have a better option in holdover Brian Hoyer. The 28-year-old journeyman QB started three games for the Browns last year, after the team mercifully gave up on the Brandon Weeden experiment and before he was lost for the year with a knee injury. In Hoyers three starts, he threw for 615 yards and five touchdowns to three interceptions, completing nearly 60 percent of his passes. Perhaps more importantly, Hoyers three starts accounted for three of the teams four wins on the season. In a perfect world, the undrafted free agent would have escaped Kiko Alonsos tackle and played out the rest of the year. In that scenario the Browns would have a better idea if Hoyer is a legit talent or just a mediocre QB who got injured before he could come back down to earth from his hot streak. Now ex-general manager Michael Lombardi was Hoyers biggest fan and the new regime drafted Manziel in the first round for a reason, but that doesnt mean they wont employ the veteran at least as a stop-gap. “I would say its a tall task, for a couple reasons,” head coach Mike Pettine told The Chronicle-Telegram of Manziels chances of starting Week 1. “One, hes a rookie coming in learning the system. Hes learning something thats completely new to him, so hes got all new verbiage and reads and that type of thing working against him.” “And then the guy (Hoyer) hes competing with is an NFL veteran whos learned from one of the best in the game, whos very prepared, very focused. Its a very true statement, it will be difficult.” Still, Manziel is no doubt the future, and unless the Browns start 3-0 under Hoyer the sooner the better for Browns fans. Manziel has been good in camp, slowly stealing first-team reps from Hoyer, and putting up a 30-59 for 296 yards and two touchdowns line in the preseason. Most believe Manziels time will come midway through the season, probably around the same time the Jacksonville Jaguars start Blake Bortles and maybe even when the Oakland Raiders turn to Derek Carr. It wont be until then that the rookie QB race is on and all eyes will be on Manziel, and not just Monday to Saturday. Notes Whether its Hoyer or Manziel, either would have benefited from the presence of receiver Josh Gordon, who is arguably a top three pass catcher in the league. But it looks like thats not going to be the case. Gordon, who led the league in receiving yards with 1,646 last year, will be suspended for multiple marijuana busts. The Browns conducted the longest head coaching search of the off-season this year, after firing Rod Chudzinski after just one season. Mike Pettine may end up being a solid choice, but it would be hard for the Browns to argue he was there first choice. After seeing a number of candidates accept other positions, or stay in their current situations, Pettine seemed closer to a leftover hire than a coach in demand. While Manziel dominated all the headlines in early May, he was only the second player taken by the Browns after CB Justin Gilbert was nabbed with the eighth overall pick. Gilbert, like high second round pick Joel Bitonio, an offensive tackle out of Nevada, arent nearly as flashy as Manziel but should be stable talents and building blocks for the Browns for years to come. Two of the Browns big free agent signings are NFL talents for sure, but may not be as good as the guy theyre tasked with replacing. After releasing longtime Browns linebacker DQwell Jackson, Cleveland signed former Arizona Cardinals LB Karlos Dansby and once safety T.J. Ward left via free agency, the Browns grabbed the next best safety on the market in Donte Whitner. Two other intriguing free agent signings were RB Ben Tate and WR Andrew Hawkins. Each have shown flashes of talent in their limited roles before signing on for bigger roles in Cleveland. Shelby Miller Diamondbacks Jersey . There were some nerves and there werent any birdies. The Canadian ended up posting a five-over 75 on the Pinehurst No. 2 course that left him 10 back of the lead. “I got off to a rough start,” DeLaet acknowledged after his round. “It might have been just a little bit of nerves. I wasnt hitting my driver great and then a couple of short-game miscues.” DeLaet started with bogeys on two of the first three holes, including a three-putt on the 12th hole from about 10 feet. Still, he didnt appear out of sorts on the course in the early going and after a bogey on the par-3 15th, he settled into a nice stretch, rolling off nine-straight pars. “I felt I got in a pretty good rhythm for the majority of the middle part of my round,” he stated. “I wasnt really able to make birdies, but I had a couple of tap-in pars that kept it stress free.” He stumbled in, however, making what he called disappointing bogeys on two of the last three holes. An errant tee shot on seven that landed in a bunker led to a bogey while on the last hole he was unable to get on the green in two. “It was disappointing to bogey seven and nine coming in because, if I was able to finish at three over, I would have been pretty happpy,” he said.dddddddddddd The stats show that DeLaet made 10 fairways – above average for the field – and 11 greens, also above the average. But on the greens, the putter didnt seem to be working. He used his flat stick 33 times, far too many, but easily understandable on Pinehursts difficult greens. “Its tough,” summed up DeLaet. “Its a tough round of golf. I felt like I handled it well. Unfortunately, I just didnt execute coming in.” DeLaets score came on a day when the field posted the lowest scoring average at a U.S. Open since 2003. The course average was 73.23 and there were more under par scores on Day One than in the opening rounds of the previous two years combined. But on a course that is playing this tough and with few birdie holes on the course, planning a comeback is not as easy. DeLaet understands that and will try to stay the course as he did in the first round. “Its just being patient,” he stated. “I was proud of myself for doing that all day even though its hard to aim a nine-iron 30 feet from the hole just trying to make four, but thats kind of what you have to do. Well see what happens, if I get a little behind the eight ball I might have to press. “Im not completely out of it. I know that a good round [Friday] will go a long way to getting back into it.” Wholesale Hoodies NFL Shirts Outlet Jerseys NFL Wholesale Cheap NFL Jerseys Free Shipping Wholesale Jerseys Cheap Cheap NFL Jerseys China Wholesale Jerseys Wholesale NFL Jerseys Cheap NFL Jerseys China Cheap NFL Jerseys ' ' '
