Topic: that much more time to get the ca

A team with loads of forward depth, the Philadelphia Flyers have fantasy options ranging from proven veterans to rising stars and if you are in a league that rewards penalty minutes, they have some of those too. Top Picks: Over the last three seasons, C Claude Giroux has put up 216 points, the fourth-best total in the league. Even with an offseason finger injury, Giroux is a good bet to be among the top scorers in the league, making him a No. 1 centre option for fantasy owners. RW Jakub Voracek had a breakout season in 2013, scoring 46 points in 48 games, and while hes not likely to score on 17.1% of his shots like he did last season, paired with Giroux on the Flyers top line, Voracek is going to have significant value, enough to fit as a No. 2 fantasy right winger. Offering similar value, though he doesnt score as much, Wayne Simmonds adds a physical dimension, with hits and penalty minutes supporting his increased scoring numbers over the last couple seasons in Philadelphia. Value Plays: There hasnt been any great decline in production for C Vincent Lecavalier, who has scored between 0.77 and 0.87 points per game in each of the last five seasons, but injuries have started to have an effect on how often he plays, as hes missed 44 games over the past three seasons. Still, hes going to have solid linemates as the Flyers second-line centre and has value as a No. 3 fantasy pivot, even with injury expectations. Prior to last season, LW Scott Hartnell was a bit of a fantasy darling, particularly for leagues that count penalty minutes, as he has scored 20 or more goals six times and recorded 100 or more penalty minutes eight times in his career. The normally durable winger had injuries and finished with just 12 points in 32 games, but that brings his value back to a more reasonable level. Though RW Matt Read doesnt necessarily have the highest upside, he does have 71 points in 121 games over the last two seasons and he plays 18 minutes a game for the Flyers. His versatility allows him to move from line to line, but if Read is going to have sustainable value, hell need to secure a regular spot in the top six. Brought in to upgrade the Flyers puck-moving skills on the blueline, D Mark Streit has been a productive point producer, but he comes with some concerns, notably that hes minus-41 in the last two seasons and is going to turn 36 midway through this season, so its likely that his performance is due to decline. Streits arrival takes some pressure off Kimmo Timonen, a 38-year-old who has been durable, consistent and productive throughout his career. Both Streit and Timonen can provide value if they are selected as No. 3 fantasy defencemen. Sleepers/Breakthrough: Part of the challenge facing C Sean Couturier is that hes such a good defensive player that he doesnt necessarily get the linemates or opportunity take advantage of his offensive skills, but the Flyers are deep enough that Couturier, as the third-line centre, could be quite productive. He didnt score much last season, with a low 5.3% shooting percentage, but hes a 20-year-old who has 192 points in 126 games in last two junior seasons and tallied 28 points in 31 AHL games last year. LW Brayden Schenn has been coming along slowly since he was the fifth overall pick in 2009, but scored a career-high 26 points (in 47 games) last season and figures to get a shot on Lecavaliers left wing to open the season, a decent spot for 22-year-old Schenn to build his offensive numbers. Braydens brother, D Luke Schenn, hasnt scored more than 22 points in a season, yet has value in leagues that count hits and blocked shots because he has 881 and 501, respectively in the last four seasons. The goaltending situation basically leaves the Flyers with two sleepers. Ray Emery should have the edge, but hes played more than 40 games only once in his entire career. Steve Mason, on the other hand, has played plenty but, among the 26 goaltenders to play at least 200 games since 2008-2009, Masons .905 save percentage is the worst. Rookies: The Flyers dont have a lineup with great openings for rookies, but C Scott Laughton started last year with Philadelphia for five games before returning to the Ontario Hockey League, where he had 56 points in 49 games for Oshawa. Hes a gritty, physical player, but not likely to have fantasy relevance. Scott Cullen can be reached at Scott.Cullen@bellmedia.ca and followed on Twitter at http://twitter.com/tsnscottcullen. Many of those eyes are in the United States of America, a country that the sport has wanted on its side for some time. On Sunday the football Gods delivered once again, only this time it was time for good old USA to experience as much heartache as joy.CONCORD, N.C. - Happy Harvick has lived up to his nickname this season, and hopes the good times with new team Stewart-Haas Racing roll on at Charlotte.Kevin Harvick heads into the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday night coming off a win and three top-10s in the last four races. He was in position to win last weeks All-Star race until a slow final pit stop caused him to finish second at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Now he goes into the Coca-Cola 600 looking for his third win in four years at NASCARs longest race of the season. Harvick won the 600-miler in 2011 and 2013, and feels hes got another shot with his new No. 4 Chevrolet. The first minute that I was in that car, I havent quit smiling, Harvick said. Its been so refreshing and so much fun to be part of that every day.Harvick, who won 23 races in 13 seasons driving for Richard Childress Racing, said theres something different and special about his new Rodney Childers-led crew. He praised Stewart-Haas, too.The bottom line is the organization from a whole has given us every resource that we have asked for, Harvick said. You never talk about money. Its just what do you need and how do we get it for you.Harvick broke through early to dominate at Phoenix for his first win with his new team, then went through some growing pains with four finishes of 36th or worse in his next five events. Things turned around at Darlington last month when Harvick outran Hendrick Motorsports stars Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jimmie Johnson for the victory, and he hasnt slowed down since.Harvick credits much of the success to Childers, recruited by Stewart-Haas after two years as a crew chief at Michael Waltrip Racing. Childers and Harvick have connected over their desire to win, not just on race day, but during every practice session, tire test or pit stop. They all want to win and race for championships, Harvick said, and when you put (those) kind of people together with that determination, everybody pushes everybody else.Five things to watch during Sundays race:EYES ON KURT: Fans wont be the only ones watching Kurt Buschs try at the grueling, 1,100-mile double of the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600. Buschs colleagues in NASCAR will be following very closely. Clint Bowyer said he cant wait to get up Sunday and watch the Indy 500 to see how Busch is doing.dddddddddddd Fans are paying attention to that and were paying attention, everybody in this room and everybody in this garage area is paying attention to it, Bowyer said. Thats a big story for us.JOHNSONS SEASON: Its been a long, dry season for defending Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, whos been winless this season through 11 races to match his longest drought, at the start of the 2003 season. But Johnson showed some signs hes ready to break back on top, collecting his first pole of the season for Sundays race. Johnson has had success at Charlotte Motor Speedway with a record-tying six previous wins including three in the Coca-Cola 600. If I win, then Im winning too much. If Im not winning, then its Why arent you winning? So I cant do it right either way. I learned a long time ago to not pay attention to the outside voices and influences and just worry about my race team, he said.SUPER DALE JR.: Dale Earnhardt Jr. will be running with Superman on his No. 88 machine as part of a multi-year sponsorship deal between Hendrick Motorsports and DC Comics. Earnhardt was asked what super power hed most like to have. Super-human strength would be the best one to have, I think. Being able to pick stuff up and throw it across the yard would be fun. You can impress your friends and show off for the ladies, he said.LONG, LONG RACE: In NASCARs longest event, it doesnt pay to take chances early on. Harvick said he keeps telling himself to stay patient because the extra 100-miles gives teams that much more time to get the car perfectly tuned for last stretch. Its also about nutrition, said Jamie McMurray: Its always about trying to get enough food in your system so that youre not hungry or feel week toward the end.MILITARY SALUTES: Few sports honour the military as well as NASCAR and expect another big show at Charlotte. Goodyear again will adorn its race tires with Salute Our Troops and will match funds up to $50,000 raised through charity auction. Tommy Baldwin Racing teams are also involved in a Salute The Troops letter writing initiative where people can send notes, cards and letters of thanks and support to military personnel. Count on flyovers and military vehicles, too.
