Many of the top researchers in their fields claim that they do not have any time left to read books, stay up on all the journals, or read about all that is going on in their industry or area of research. But if one holds themselves out to be a top scientist or researcher in their field then they certainly ought to know what they are talking about. This is quite bothersome because you'd have expected them to know the answer or acknowledge the information. Indeed, most of the researchers I've found are so busy working on their research that they do not keep up on the new stuff; then are surprised when I or one of their students comes up with something they haven't heard of, but it's because they are locked in the research labs, actually working on research, instead of reading about what other people have done.

This is also why a 10-year old PhD is worthless unless you stay up on your subject or area of expertise, because by then everything has changed and we know so much more than we did. Nevertheless, the more collaboration and reading that is done, the less research that maybe necessary, even though at some point everyone needs to stop talking and somebody needs to get busy and actually do something.
